4 Steps to Change Your Emotional Home from Negative to Positive Emotions
When people are asked to answer with in 10 seconds what one thing would impact their lives most wonderfully. The typical majority answer is to "win the lottery".. Most specify the 100 million or more lottery. The truth is in my coaching business I have found consistently that money is not a predictor of happiness or satisfaction or finding a fulfilling life. My clientele ranges from people who enjoy millions of dollars and those who enjoy a few thousand a year. Consider this: folks in the Pacific Island of Vanuatu are ranked some of the happiest people in the world without the income. Perhaps it is a matter of where their home is. Not their physical home, but their Emotional Home.
We all have an Emotional home. Your emotional home is the state you naturally return to—the feelings you experience most often. Whether you live in a place of joy or frequently find yourself in fear, anger, or sadness, you have the power to shift your emotional home. Here’s how:
1. Discover Your Emotional Patterns Start by identifying the emotions you experience most frequently. For at least one week, write down the emotions that show up repeatedly, such as fear, sadness, guilt, or anger. By doing this, you’ll gain insight into your emotional habits, which is the first step toward change.
2. Understand How Your Body Reacts to Each Emotion Emotions are deeply connected to your body. Notice how your body responds to different feelings. Do you clench your jaw when angry, or hunch your shoulders when stressed? Recognizing these physical cues helps you understand how your body reinforces negative emotions.
3. Identify Your Desired Emotional States Think about the emotions you want to experience more frequently. Do you long for more love, joy, confidence, peace, or kindness in your life? Identifying these preferred states gives you a clear target to aim for as you shift away from negative patterns.
4. Practice Shifting from Negative to Positive States One powerful way to change your emotions is by changing your physical state. Your posture, breathing, and movements influence your feelings. For example, standing tall, smiling, and taking deep breaths can naturally create feelings of confidence and happiness. When you catch yourself in a negative state, consciously shift your body and thoughts to align with the positive emotions you want to feel.
